Vikram's Thaandavam Movie Review

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Sunday, September 30, 2012 | 1:05 PM

Vikram is back with a bang! Returning as a silent but deadly blind revenge seeking hero, he takes centre screen to kick butt. Infusing a credible premise with honesty, and peppering the film with tender moments, director Vijay creates an engaging drama that you're happy to emotionally invest in.

Technically, Thaandavam is one of the best films to have emerged out of Kollywood in a long time. Add to that some peppy melodies from GV Prakash and comedy that goes with the narration makes it entertaining.

The film is set in London, with Thanjavur and New Delhi coming only in flashbacks. It opens with Kenny (Vikram), a Pianist in a church and a blind man who is on a vendetta mission in London, which has been ravaged by a series of bomb blasts.

During the night, Kenny becomes an obsessed killing machine and travels in a taxi driven by a crazy MGR fan Sathyan (Santhanam) and goes on a killing spree murdering mostly white men. There is more suspense in the form of a mystery woman Geeta (Lakshmi Rai) who helps Kenny in London.

Kenny meets up with the glamorous Sarah (Amy Jackson) a beauty queen turned model. Constantly on his trail is Veerakathi (Nasser) a London police officer who suspects Kenny’s involvement in the bloody murders that rocks the city. In a flashback mode it is revealed that Kenny is actually a top RAW officer Sivakumar whose buddy was Sarath (Jagapathy Babu), his colleague in the intelligence department. Siva marries Meenakshi (Anushka) an eye surgeon and was leading a peaceful life till fate intervened cruelly and turned his life upside down.

It is Vikram and him alone who diverts your attention from the film's little logical script flaws and spellbinds you with an endearing act that is Thaandavam's biggest strength. Exuding menace with his expressive eyes and body language and the tiniest of tics to make flesh-and-blood characters out of Sivakumar IPS and Kenny the blind man seeking revenge, Vikram is simply terrific. Vijay with the help of Daniel Kish, an echolocation expert has made Vikram’s blind assassin role credible and awesome.

Jagapathy Babu is a refreshing and welcome change in a pivotal character role that’s crucial to the film’s plot. Amy Jackson is camera friendly and Anushka in a matured role is good. Santhanam is the comedy scene stealer as a London taxi driver. Lakshmi gives her best in the small role.

Technically it is Vijay’s best film with superior eye-catching camera by Nirav Shah and peppy melodies by GV Prakash with ‘Oru Paadhi Kadhavu’ being the pick of the lot. The action choreography by Manohar Verma is awesome especially the fast paced fight scene when a blind Vikram is attacked by six foreigners in a London park.

On the downside, logical loopholes are quite obvious. Here's a little sample -An intelligent doctor Anushka thinking that her husband who goes to office in suit and drives a high end SUV is an inspector or SI and recommends to the police commissioner for his promotion is hard to digest. The London police is made to look like a set of idiots. The film is a tad too long at 156 minutes, and at times taxes the viewer’s patience especially the ‘Roja’ like village wedding scenes.

Please note inspite of some gruesome killings in the plotline there is no blood or gore, hardly any smoking scenes, no drinking scenes or even an item number. For an audience numbed by predictable Kollywood potboilers week after week, Thaandavam might take some time to settle into; go in with an open mind and enjoy the ride.

Well done Vijay and UTV for making a film that can be viewed by family audiences.

Verdict :- Good

I’ve no clue about Karikalan: Zareen

There’s no news about her debut Kollywood film Karikaalan with Vikram, but Zareen P Khan will now be seen in an item number in Naan Rajavaga Pogiren. But, will she be resuming shoot for Karikaalan soon? “I’ve no clue what’s happening to the film.

I started shooting for it, and I was in touch with a co-ordinator who told me I would be informed of the next schedule. But, I haven’t heard from the team at all. I was first told Vikram is busy shooting for another movie. And then, I heard that the movie was embroiled in some controversy about the script. Later, I read that the director has been replaced. And now, I’m hearing that the movie is shelved. But the production hasn’t informed me about the film’s status.

The co-ordinator is not even taking my calls! My dates are getting wasted, and no one seems to be bothered about updating me. Even if the film is not happening, I’m entitled to know its status!” she fumes.

Thaandavam First Day First Show Chiyaan Vikram fans Celebrations in Theatres | CVF

THAANDAVAM IS A COMPLETE ENTERTAINER

Vikram fans have reason to cheer. For, UTV Motion Pictures’ Thaandavam hits screens today and promises to be a treat for them. The actor, who’s currently shooting in China, is excited about the release of a film that they’ve worked hard on.

“My fans can look forward for complete entertainment with my action sequences and my different acting performances,” he says, “The film is a complete package that has action sequences, many comedy scenes, an interesting love track, family sentiments and elements of friendship.

” Vikram has already worked with director Vijay in Deiva Thiirumagal. Ask him about the difference between the two flicks and he says, “More or less, I reflected the person of the director’s vision for these characters. Vijay was very clear what he wanted. He did thorough research for his character which helped me to portray it in my own way.” The concept of human echolocation seems to have fascinated the star. “I first had apprehensions about this character and on the concept of echolocation.

However, when Vijay presented the video links of Daniel Kish (an expert on human echolocation), I was more convinced,” recalls Vikram, “Before the shoot commenced we were fortunate that Daniel was a part of shooting and trained me to do the character more authentically.”

About working with the leading ladies, he says, “Anushka is a real sweetie and has come out with a brilliant performance. Amy has got a sweet character and will be appreciated for that. Lakshmi Rai’s character will also leave an impact with audience.”

Eight cities in China for Vikram's ‘ஐ’(I)

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Thursday, September 27, 2012 | 10:37 PM

We hear that director Shankar has left with his cast and crew to China to shoot for I. And it’s being said that he plans to shoot in eight cities in the country!

A source in the know says, “Shankar is known to shoot in some of the best locations in the world. He has introduced several interesting places to the audience, like the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in North-Eastern Brazil where he shot Kadhal Anukkal....

Now, he wants to continue the trend with the Vikram-starrer as well.” The source further adds, “The film will be shot in eight cities in China, and the unit will cover roughly about 30,000 km along the way. Shankar and his associates had gone to hunt for locations earlier. They have already charted out the course of their travel in the country.”

Also, the buzz was that, apart from Amy Jackson, the film would also feature another top heroine in the lead. But, our source tells us that the film will have only one heroine. Shankar had written on his blog, “This is not a political film or about elections…This is a full and full romantic thriller.”

‘Thaandavam was a huge challenge’ - Dir Vijay

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 | 7:40 AM

‘Thaandavam was a huge challenge’ - says director Vijay, who is looking forward to the release of his Vikram-starrer V Lakshmi Director Vijay has been working frenetically for the past few days to get the final print of UTV Motion Pictures’ Thaandavam ready. With the release date nearing, quiz him if he is anxious about the movie’s result, and he says,

“This film has been a huge challenge. We’ve focussed on a new concept; have a huge star cast and the best of technicians onboard. But, we had to face a lot of hurdles. The London weather wasn’t too kind with us. And then, we had to discredit a lot of rumours like how the script of the film wasn’t mine and how certain footages that we shot abroad were lost. I must say, we’ve survived and strived hard, and I hope the audience like what they see on screen.” Produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapoor, the film boasts of a talented cast. He says, “

Everyone has done a fabulous job, and have added to the film in their own way. Vikram has given a powerpacked performance as an ambitious intelligence officer.” Ask him what the highlight of this film will be, and he says, “There’s a cute love story between Vikram and Anushka, which is vital to the film. Anthony’s editing in the second half of the film will also be much talked about.” In many ways, Vijay admits Thaandavam will be close to his heart. “I believe that a movie should have an impact on the audience.

After Thaandavam, I’m sure many people will come to know about human echolocation and Daniel Kish’s efforts to help the visually-challenged ‘see through their ears’,” he signs off.

Vikram's Thaandavam Second New Official Trailer

Chiyaan Vikram's Thaandavam Official Second Trailer

The V factor - Vikram Interview in The Hindu

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Saturday, September 22, 2012 | 11:44 PM

As A. L. Vijay’s Thaandavam is set to hit the screens, actor Vikram talks about the film and the different shades of his role. malathi rangarajan listens in…

Effervescence is a Vikram trademark, and this interaction is no exception. Just a poser about his soon-to-be-released Thaandavam, and he takes off with enthusiasm! Info pours out in torrents and if you aren’t clued in you could lose track. We converse for more than an hour and at the end of it he still has a lot to say about Thaandavam! That, despite the fact it has been a hectic day for the actor — dubbing, completing the patchwork for Thaandavam and getting ready for a photo shoot for I, his next with director Shankar. Talking about cinema never tires him.

Vikram shares his Thaandavam experience showering a cornucopia of compliments on the film’s director Vijay. ‘But I thought you are going to talk about your role in it,’ I try to butt in. “Yeah, I’ve worked hard too. Still it is Vijay’s vision and his well-honed script that we actors have given form to. In the past few months, the young man has been thinking of nothing except Thaandavam. Even now he’s at the studio spending sleepless nights, lending the finishing touches,” he says. his hero-auteur combo seems to have really clicked. “I love working with Vijay.

While we were doing Deiva Thirumagal we started discussing the story of Thaandavam and on the sets of Thaandavam Vijay began dwelling on the plot of his next project with me. I wish to do at least one film with him every year,” he says. Is Thaandavam an original story? “Of course, it is,” says Vikram and goes on to add, “even if DT was inspired by I am Sam, Vijay breathed so much freshness into the script and made it suitable to our milieu that it was more like his own story.”

The buzz is that the plot of Thaandavam is borrowed, but Vikram doesn’t seem to think so. And hasn’t Thaandavam been shot mostly in England? “That’s what I mean. Even so there’s nothing alien about the film. Vijay’s a one-man army, skilled at multi-tasking. He has an innocence and genuineness about him which get transferred to the characters. You ought to have seen the accolades showered on DT in Japan. You can still catch it on the net.” Thaandavam is a thriller, I hear.

A genre Vikram has not tried his hand at before! “Mmm … you’re right. It’s hard-hitting and sharp, with a strong emotional content. Intelligent scripting is Vijay’s forte,” Vikram continues. “And the fights will be very realistic.” Playing a visually challenged part isn’t new to Vikram. But this is probably the first time he’ll be seen in a dual role. “But it’s a very different kind of double role. And yes, it’s new for me,” he says.

Is the visually challenged character he portrays in Thaandavam going to be on the lines of a role he essayed in Kaasi? “You have a million ways of showing blindness. Thanks to Daniel Kish and Thaandavam, we are getting to know about echolocation, the acumen and sharp sound sense of such people. During Kaasi, the challenge befuddled me. How could they walk so confidently on the streets with just a stick to help them find their way, I would wonder! Now I know that their aural sense is far superior to ours,”

Vikram explains. Daniel Kish, who lost his vision as a baby and now trains those like him to fine-tune their auditory skills, has trained Vikram for the role. It is awe-inspiring to listen to Vikram talk about the incredible skill of this human echolocation expert. Kish was in Chennai recently to dub for his part — besides training Vikram, the mobility specialist has also played a small role in Thaandavam.

Vikram was taken aback when for a shot he had to stand next to a pillar and Kish told him, I think this pillar has a metal pipe running through it. “And he was right,” Vikram explains. “A lot of underplayed emotions, and acoustic way-findings as they are known, will lend uniqueness to the treatment of Thaandavam.” He believes that after the film, everyone will understand the impairment better and those affected will find it a confidence booster. Anushka and Amy Jackson play the female leads.

“Lakshmi Rai will be seen in a significant role,” he says. Promos have begun and the Thaandavam team will go all out to ensure the film’s success. “It has to be done. These days the run in the first fortnight of release is crucial and we have to make the most of it. I have to be available for the publicity. No hype is too much. Yet at the end of it we aren’t God to know what’s in store,” smiles Vikram. The words are in response to my query about why the reception to his Rajapaattai was lukewarm. “I had just done a serious film and we thought we’d go in for a commercial film, a masala …” his voice trails. “It happens.”

“But everyone will like Shiva [Vikram’s name in the film] and his Thaandavam,” he adds.

Vikram dubs in Telugu for Siva Thaandavam

Vikram is the latest to join the trend of lending his voice for the T'wood version of his films

Chiyaan Vikram is the latest to join the trend of lending his voice for the Tollywood version of his Tamil films. Though Kamal Haasan used to lend his voice for his movies dubbed in Telugu, it was Karthi who revived this trend in recent times. Suriya followed suit for his upcoming Brothers, the T'town version of Maatraan.

Chiyaan who enjoys a big market in Andhra has resolved to dub his own voice. The actor was spotted at a dubbing studio in the city recently where he was seen giving his voice for Siva Thaandavam, the Telugu version of Thaandavam.

Vikram's ஐ "I" completes First Schedule

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 | 5:54 PM

The first look of director Shankar's new film ஐ " I " , starring Chiyaan Vikram, has already taken the industry by wave. The shooting of the film started on July 15, in Chennai. The film is made with an whopping Rs. 80 crores budget.

The latest is that the film has completed its first schedule in Chennai. Director Shankar shared on his official blog as "We’ve successfully completed a long schedule of 41 days, from July 15th to September 1st, including a song and an action sequence." They will be soon leaving for China for their next schedule.

This romantic thriller is produced by Aascar Ravichandran. Amy Jackson is the heroine and she plays the role of an international model. Suresh Gopi and Ramkumar play pivotal roles. A.R. Rahman is scoring the music, while PC Sreeram is in charge of cinematography.

Shankar,Vikram, Amy off to China

The entire team of the big bud get film I is off to China for a 45 day shoot. The lead pair of Vikram and Amy Jackson, Shankar, P.C. Sreeram and 60-odd members will take off on the weekend for the Aascar Ravichandran film.

A major chunk of the `140-crore film is being shot in China as the script demands a locale like the Land of the Sleeping Giant. Though I was said to be a political satire, a source from Aascar Films claimed that it is a high action commercial entertainer that bears Shankar's stamp. Vikram in an earlier interview had told DC that I would be hundred times bigger than Anniyan in grandeur and as far as his role goes.

Buzz is that Vikram's character has intriguing dimensions and the characterisation would shock the audience. Comedian Santhanam has been roped in for a crucial role apart from his usual comic quotient. A.R. Rahman has already churned out a few peppy numbers for the film. One of the songs was canned recently on the lead pair.

I rewrote my portion in 'Thaandavam': Daniel Kish

The crew of 'Thaandavam' had earlier promised that they would bring Daniel Kish, believed to be the inspiration for the lead character played by Vikram in the film. As promised, Daniel Kish is now in Chennai. Having lost his eyesight completely 13 months after he was born, he hardly had any visual memory.

Daniel Kish naturally started echolocating by making clicking sounds using mouth to ascertain at what distance objects are and he has worked it up to an art, almost!

Having trained hundreds of visually-challenged people to see using their ears, one of his favourite hobbies is hiking in the mountains. "For the amount of travelling I do, I don't trek as much as I would like to. But if trekking was what I did for a living, I would do it all the time and I would like live out there in mountains," he says. That wouldn't be difficult for Kish as he already owns a trekking cabin in a mountain trail in Los Angeles.

Apart from being the first visually-challenged person to acquire the National Blindness Professional Certification (NOMC) and being recognised as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), Kish is not a newbie to filmdom. "I have not participated in a feature film but have done many documentaries. I'm very familiar and comfortable with cameras. I was involved in a set show, but not as an actor but as a technical advisor. I had to train one of the actors for crime-drama series 'Criminal Minds' and I got to see how the whole production unit works. The whole experience helped me," he says.

In fact, Daniel Kish has worked on the original script of 'Thaandavam' to make his character more real. "They presented me with a general script that showed the scene layout and dialogues. I was not being asked to mould a character, but to portray myself. So the dialogues and movements had to be almost exactly like my normal routine. So, director Vijay had agreed to allow me to adjust the script to include my personality, my speech patterns and the kind of things I would say and do," says Kish.

But there were some difficulties during the first two days of shooting, "For one particular frame, I had to change my movements. It was a relatively minor thing and I just had to get used to it," he says. Kish is open to more such opportunities to educate people about echolocation and is visiting India in December again. "What is difficult is to make blind people get out of the practices they are already used to and re-adapt," he says.

Vikram’s 'Thaandavam' Deals With Human Echolocation

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Sunday, September 16, 2012 | 1:22 PM

The most-anticipated Tamil action thriller movie "Thaandavam" starring Vikram, Anushka Shetty and British beauty Amy Jackson revolves around a blind-man who uses human echolocation technique to seek revenge. Directed by AL Vijay and produced by UTV production, the film is all scheduled to hit the screens on September 28th.

Vikram and Vijay have reunited for "Thaandavam" after delivering blockbuster "Deiva Thirumagal." In their previous movie outing, they narrated a heart-warming relationship between a father and a daughter, and now they have come up with a revenge story. Buzz is that Vikram is playing the role of a police officer but doesn't wear the uniform. His character in the movie is said to be inspired by Daniel Kish, an American-based human echolocation expert.

Daniel Kish has been roped in to the "Thaandavam" project by the filmmakers to assist the protagonist to understand the techniques of echolocation and get into the skin of the character. In his forthcoming film, Vikram set himself on a revenge quest and fights his enemies despite the fact that he is visually impaired using echolocation method.

Human echolocation is a state of the art, where humans are able to recognize the objects/people in a surrounding and sense their movement towards them to spontaneously respond by actively generating sounds.

Vikram had earlier essayed the role of visually-challenged person in "Kasi" (2001). One of his movies "Kanthaswamy", (2009) too has a fight sequence, where he took on his foes blindfolded by sensing their foot movements.

Going by the trailer of "Thaandavam", Vikram figures out his enemies and takes them down by making clicking sounds with his mouth. "Thaandavam" trailer promises big and assures a sure-treat for the action enthusiasts. The film will also be released in Telugu as "Shiva Thandavam."

Vikram’s 'Thaandavam' Special Premier on September 27th

Tamil actor Vikram's forthcoming film "Thaandavam" will have a special screening a day before its scheduled release in Chennai to raise funds for National Association for the Blind (NAB) in Tamil Nadu.

The "Thaandavam" film bosses on Saturday announced the descion to hold a premier show of upcoming action thriller to help raise fund for a good cause. "Thaandavam" premier show will be held in all six screens of Satyam Cinemas on September 27 and the total proceedings will go to NAB organisation to support its noble initiatives.

"As a part of our fund raising activity, we have tied up with UTV Pictures and Satyam Cinemas for holding a Premiere show of the latest movie - Thaandavam," said NAB in a statement. "The film is scheduled to be released on Sep 28 and the Premiere show will be held at 10 PM on the Sep 27 at all six theatres in Satyam Cinemas.

The tickets to the Premiere show are being sold to raise funds for the activities of the National Association for the Blind - Tamilnadu." UTV South Chief Dhananjayan Govind also confirmed the news. He tweeted, "#Thaandavam premiere on 27th night in all 6 screens of Sathyam. The entire proceedings go to National Association for the Blind (NAB)." Given that the main plot of "Thaandavam" revolves around a blind-man, the movie bosses seem to have been inspired to help raise fund for NAB organisation, which looks after visually-challenged people.

"Thaandavam" features Vikram, Anushka Shetty and Amy Jackson in lead roles. The film is directed by AL Vijay and produced by UTV production house. It will also be released in Telugu as "Shiva Thandavam."

(To get donor passes for the film, contact Mr.Krishna Rao at 90030 53989 or call NAB office at 25376856 / 25586598. )

Vikram's Thaandavam gearing up for release

UTV Motion Pictures and Chiyaan Vikram's Thaandavam is getting ready for release by the end of September.

The film is still embroiled in a controversy over its script. A case was filed by an assistant director with the Directors' Union claiming that the film was based on his script. He wants credit for his story and is not willing to compromise.

Director A L Vijay held a special screening of the film for members of Directors' Union and the assistant director who had complained about the film's story.

UTV is trying their best to sort out the problem, as the films promotions have to begin with the release date being announced.

UTV South chief G Dhananjayan tweeted: "I strongly believe that truth ultimately prevails, hence not worried about obstacles & challenges on the way. Truth is God & he is with us."

Dhananjayan also said that the film - which is 152 minutes long - will be censored next week and they are planning a huge release in Tamil and Telugu.

Vikram's Shiva Thandavam in Overseas by iDream

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Friday, September 14, 2012 | 6:54 PM

Super Star Vikram who enthralled audiences all over, with his stellar performances in ‘Aparichithudu’, ‘Sivaputrudu’, teams up with Anushka, Amy Jackson, Jagapathi Babu, in the direction of Vijay, to offer this time a high voltage, slick action thriller ‘Siva Tandavam’. The film also has Laxmi Roy and Kota Srinivasa Rao in important roles. Extensively shot in London, the film is designed as an Unusual Revenge Story and in Vikram’s own words, his BIGGEST movie yet.

Vikram plays a dual – dimensional role, as a RAW agent who turns a Visually Challenged Person, navigating his surroundings only through sound, a technique called as ECHOLOCATION and yet performing breathtaking action sequences. Vikram underwent special training sessions for essaying this role. Incidentally, the character of the visually challenged person in high risk situations is inspired by the real life of Daniel Kish from the United States. Daniel Kish had earlier come down to India in September to share his experiences.

Anushka has a meaty role and looks her gorgeous best in the melodies set to tune by G.V.Prakash. For the 25 year old G.V.Prakash, who delivered some of the biggest musical hit, this is his 25th Project. The colorful music launch held on 10th September at Hyderabad, where the entire CAST took part, was underlined with some traditional and spectacular performances of Perini Siva Tandavam, and the AGNI group.

Amy Jackson, who just also landed a coveted role opposite Mega Power Star Ram Charan, plays the other romantic interest to Vikram in Siva Tandavam.

For Jagapathi Babu who gave Telugu audiences some powerhouse performances in films like Antahpuram and Gaayam, Siva Tandavam is yet another land mark role, which is very intense with negative shades.

Noted Producer C. Kalyan produced Siva Tandavam under Teja Cinema banner and the film is presented by UTV Motion Pictures. Set to provide some edge of the seat entertainment to audiences, the film is slated for a worldwide release in September 28th.

iDREAM will be distributing SIVA TANDAVAM in Overseas markets. As announced recently, iDREAM is also distributing Gautham Menon’s Romantic Saga ‘YETO VELLI POYINDHI MANASU’ starring Nani and Samantha.
