Free-bird Amy looks to sign up more movies in Tamil
IndiaGlitz [Monday, December 30, 2013]
Amy Jackson is heaving a huge sigh of relief now that the shooting schedule of Ai has been wrapped up. The pretty Briton, who debuted as heroine in Tamil films with A.L. Vijay'sMadarasapattinam three years back, is now looking forward with lots of optimism to her I helmed by mega-budget director Shankar.

Produced by Ravichandran's Aascar Films at a huge cost, Ai stars Vikram and Amy Jackson in lead roles (the two had earlier starred together in Thaandavam as well). Mollywood's Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel, Santhanam, Ramkumar Ganesan and Srinivasan play significant roles in the film.

Shankar reportedly imposed lot of restrictions on Amy Jackson's social life during the shoot of the film asking her not to drink, not to attend parties, sleep at the right time, wake up at the scheduled time and do perform yoga everyday without fail. Shankar even put a person on duty to ensure that Amy followed whatever she was instructed.

Now that the film's shoot is over, Amy wants to continue all these habits in the days to come. Shankar even asked Amy to train hard to speak in Tamil as her expressions and lip-sync ought to be perfect when the dubbing artiste works for Amy at a latter stage. Amy is said to have spoken in a typical 'Chennai' dialect in the film.

Can't wait till the film releases in 14 languages all over the world on 14th April!

Man Of Steel - Chiyaan Vikram

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 | 8:11 AM

Man Of Steel
How suffering turned a college lad into a Tamil superstar

IT WAS THE BEST NIGHT of Kenny’s life. It was the worst night of Kenny’s life. And it began on the pitch-black stage of the open-air auditorium at IIT-Madras.

At first the audience at the annual inter-collegiate festival thought that there was a technical glitch: they could hear the actors but not see them. They began to fidget. They began to boo. Then, about 15 minutes in, some of the viewers began to shush the others. They got what was happening: the play—Peter Shaffer’s Black Comedy, in which Kenny had the lead role—began in darkness but, eventually, the lights would come on. The shushing gradually overwhelmed the booing and the fidgeting. There was silence, then laughs. When the curtains came down, there was a standing ovation. Among the audience that October night in 1986 was Shailaja Balakrishnan, who knew that she would marry Kenny even though he was barely aware of her existence. She watched him get the Best Actor award, beating candidates from all the other colleges. Later she would say drishti pattuduchu—someone had cast the evil eye.

Things were going according to plan. Kenny had always wanted to be an actor—at least from 1974, when he was in the third standard at Montfort Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Yercaud. The boys’ school was staging a musical named Steam Boat and someone was needed to play a cotton-picking slave girl in Alabama. Kenny was chosen. He was dyed black with vegetable powder, squeezed into a white-and-blue dress, and positioned in a corner of the stage. He had no lines; he just had to stand on stage. But that was enough to hook him. He acted through school and at Chennai’s Loyola College, where he joined the literature programme in 1983. He acted in small, larkish events. Once, in an inter-departmental cultural festival, he parodied a famous Horlicks ad—in which a little boy says he doesn’t need to drink Horlicks, he’d eat it straight out of the bottle—by turning it into an ad for underwear. And he acted in big productions, like the college theatre society's adaptation of Herman Wouk’s The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, in which his performance had the city’s theatre critics declaring the birth of a star, an endorsement heartily echoed by crush-struck girls from Women’s Christian College and Stella Maris.

The Best Actor award at IIT-Madras seemed to be a sign. Kenny was going to finish this last year at college and then he’d become an actor in the movies, in Tamil cinema, like he’d always wanted.

It had been a long day. After the festival, Kenny hopped onto a bike, behind a friend. They zipped out of the IIT campus, took a left, and soared off into the night. They had turned right at the corner of the road by the governor’s house when Kenny noticed that his shoelaces had come undone. As he bent to attend to them, he heard a loud sound, and the next thing he knew, he was on the road. His friend had been fooling around as usual, resting his legs on the crash bars, and he couldn’t brake in time when he saw the truck speeding towards them near the traffic circle. He accelerated instead and hit the truck. The impact of the collision uprooted the railing around the traffic circle. It was Kenny’s first accident. And he didn’t even know how to ride a bike.

Shankar’s Magnum Opus Ai in final stages

Shankar is currently busy with the making of his magnum opus, ‘Manoharudu’ (‘Ai’ in Tamil). The film’s shoot is almost complete and Shankar is quite upbeat about the way this movie is shaping up. Vikram and Amy Jackson are essaying the lead roles in this movie.

” We are taking time to shoot the film but the wait will be worth it. Vikram’s makeup and VFX are taking up time, but for a 100Crore film, everything needs to be perfect. People say Vikram is a great actor and everyone will know why, once this film releases”, said Shankar.

A.R.Rahman is composing the tunes for this project. ‘Manoharudu/AI’ is expected to release in 17 languages in 2014.

'Chiyaan' VIKRAM Lost and gained weight for Ai

Shedding a few kilos and gaining weight for a role is not new to Vikram, as he has been doing this since his Sethu days. For his Ai, the actor has been on a mission to lose close to 10 kilos for the role of an 80-year old-man in his upcoming film directed by Shankar.

Vikram was said to be on a complete liquid diet for a couple of weeks and then was allowed to eat just greens and vegetables. For the first schedule of the same film, he had to put on weight, for which he spent several hours at the gym to gain those extra pounds.

Upen Patel and Amy Jackson shake a leg for Ai

Upen Patel and Amy Jackson shake a leg for Ai

While there’s a lot of discussion in Kollywood circles about Vikram’s look in Shankar’s Ai, here’s one picture of Upen Patel and Amy Jackson from the movie. The two are currently in the city and said to be filming a song that has been tuned by AR Rahman.

A source says, “Shankar, being the perfectionist he is, made Upen and Amy go through several rehearsals before canning the song. This number is expected to be the first track to be released from the film early next year.” Well, a song picturised on ‘villain’ Upen and Amy makes us wonder if Vikram is actually the bad man in the film!

Vikram on a diet | TOI

It looks like Vikram is on a weight loss programme. The actor, we hear, has been surviving only on greens and leaves. Shankar, the director of the film, says that even if the entire set of Ai would be gorging on Biriyani, Vikram would make do with greens and leaves.

Apparently, it was Vikram's idea to lose weight for the film as he felt that actors in the country showed all determination to put on weight but not the other way round. Vikram has a slim avatar in the film.

Namma Ponnu AMY | DC

Namma Ponnu Amy Jackson

The Brit beauty, who is moving to the city, talks about her much coveted lead role opposite Vikram in Ai I am very hardworking and dedicated to my acting, it's a way of life for me. I believe Shankar sir knows this and that's why he chose me Kenny and I are great friends too! He has inspired me a lot, with the different emotions he displays to perfection, and of course, the various characters he's essayed in his career. That makes me want to push boundaries

It's been three years since Liverpool lass Amy Jackson was wel comed with open arms into Kollywood -but has she finally broken the curse of the `outsider' tag? It certainly looks like it, as the Ai star is actually moving to namma Chennai! “Yes, Chennai shall be home for me shortly; I've decided that the Tamil film industry is my career -I'm loving my life here at the moment, and want to pursue this path wholeheartedly . I have a lot of friends here! Director Vijay and his family are very close to me, as is Arya. Also, I enjoyed the SIIMA awards where I got to hang out with a lot of actresses,“ smiles the former beauty queen. The success of Madrasapattinam, Ek Deewana Tha and Thaandavam has certainly catapulted her into the elite bracket of heroines today -exemplified by director Shankar choosing her for the lead role in Ai opposite Vikram, which is nearing completion. How has the experience been?

“Incredible. One fine morning, when director Vijay called to inform me that Shankar sir wanted to meet me, I was awestruck. I was in Chennai that very evening! I am very hardworking and dedicated to my acting, it's a way of life for me -I believe Shankar sir knows this and that's why he chose me. After a quick photoshoot of sorts, the role was offered to me -working with Shankar, P.C. Sreeram and A.R. Rahman opposite Kenny (Vikram) -could anyone say no to that? It was wonderful working with Santhanam and Suresh Gopi too.

The last year and half was sensational; we shot for a long time in China espe cially. Shankar uses such jaw-dropping sets; everything is larger than life and extravagant. Ai is an intelligent thriller with a romantic quotient -my character is called Diya, and is really performance-based with lots of emotional and exciting scenes. That's all I can reveal!“ she exclaims. On her second film with Vikram, she definitely agrees that their working relationship upped the ante.

“Kenny and I are great friends too! He has inspired me a lot, with the different emotions he displays to perfection, and of course, the various characters he's essayed in his career. That makes me want to push boundaries and attempt something new each time,“ Amy gushes.

The ardent animal lover who is actively involved in the PETA India campaign also says she's trying her best to get over the language barrier, and has actually picked up some Tamil! “I can actually understand when someone says something to me, but I have a little trouble replying, hehe. But acting is my passion and it's necessary for me to learn the language. I would love to work with icons like Murugadoss, Suriya and Dhanush in the future -Ai has set the bar pretty high! I'm a huge fan of Alia Bhatt's; maybe I can act with her sometime,“ Amy says.

With both her parents in Chennai for Deepavali, Amy's absolutely planning to have a blast this festive season. “My dad absolutely loves India, the culture here and the people -more than me! He absolutely thrives on the hustle-bustle here. This Deepavali, I'm planning to fine-tune my cooking skills and make something for my friends and family -fingers crossed, it works out!“ says the star.

Shankar's Interview To Vikatan About Vikram's 'Ai'

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Friday, October 25, 2013 | 8:00 AM

One of the few names in K-town whose name itself is enough to create expectation for a film right from the day of its announcement is Director Shankar. His teaming up with Chiyan Vikram after the blockbuster of 2005, Anniyan just doubled the expectations. Shankar films are said to be shot under close surveillance and the Director is popular for guarding the details of his films from being leaked. However the Directors himself shared some interesting details of his latest films titled Ai and said its a romantic thriller which will be a new genre of sorts to come from him. The Director known for being updated with latest technology threw some light on the make-up crew employed for the film. The make-up is said to play a important role in the making of the film he was on the look out for the best make-up artistes in the world and finally zeroed in on eta work shop who were previously associated with Hollywood super hits like Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit.

Shankar also said that the Weta Work shop people were highly impressed after hearing the script and had told that it will be a challenging task to work for such a film. People at the Weta were shown Shankar's 2010 blockbuster Endhiran which made them say that it is fresher than Hollywood films. They also had conveyed their willingness to work in the future projects of the most successful Director of the Tamil film industry without minding about the business.

A few months back photos revealing Vikram's looks for the film and fans were surprised to see the experienced actor look like a youth who is fresh out of college. The Director said reducing wait for the character was not his insistence and he had just suggested the actor to go for a make-up change. it was Vikram's quest to experiment that he has opted for a toned look for the film. However the situations in the film necessitate a slim hero and Vikram's looks and performance in those scenes are sure to leave the audience spellbound as stated by the Ace Director.

The Director also praised the actor as an epitome of dedication and recalled that he had only green vegetables during the shoot. . The Director said that he was initially suspicious of the suitability of the British girl Amy Jackson as the heroine of this film. However a test shoot made by Cinematographer P.C.Sreeram whom the Director is pairing up for the first time had cleared his doubts on casting Madarasapattinam girl. Shankar also said that they Amy was given the dialogues written in Tanglish and the girl will come prepared with them everyday.

Finally the Director had loads of praise for P.C.Sreeram the of the acclaimed Cinematographers of Indian Cinema. Shankar said that working with P.C.Sreeram is a beautiful experience and it is a never before experienced challenge for him to conceive scenes for PC's visual frame. Shankar also said that the Cinematographer appears to be a tough person but those who have worked with him can understand that he is like a child.

Sources say that AI has reached its last schedule which will include an action scene choreographed with an idea given by the Director himself, touted to be one of the best stunt scenes in Indian Cinema. It will feature Vikram and will be choreographed by international Stunt Choreographer Upen Patel.

Fans can look out for sparkling romance and blast of action very soon.

Martial art fight sequence in Ai

Martial art fight sequence in Ai
While the cast and crew of Ai have been pretty tight-lipped about the film’s content and the looks that some of its key actors sport, we have managed to do some snooping around Actor Upen Patel, who makes his Tamil debut with this movie, is doing a fight sequence for which he’s being trained in a form of martial art that has not been seen in any Kollywood or Hindi films before. We have learnt that the sequence will be shot in Chennai next month, and an international fight master has been roped in for this purpose.

Apparently, the training for this sequence is intense and the diet so strict and regimented that Upen, we hear, was out for the count for four days recently, owing to his rigorous schedule. This fight scene is likely to be one of the film’s major highlights, and Shankar, who’s known to be a perfectionist, wants this to be shot in the last schedule as he has himself designed the action sequence, and wants it to be on par with what one sees in Hollywood films.

'Ai' to Wrap Up Soon
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 22, 2013]
First it was a sculpted look, then it was a beaten down thin look - it is a different look every time. Director Shankar refuses to reveal anything about Vikram's challenging and changing looks, which also adds to the suspense that the film carries. While it seems like a dead end, there is news from the film's editor, Antony, who helps us take a sneak peek. In an interaction, Antony revealed that the film has come out really well, and is sure to keep the audience glued to their seats.

However the well experienced editor also feels the jitters about the big project, as he said "There is always a certain amount of fear associated when I have to work with director Shankar, as it is a huge responsibility. However, he comforts us with his good natured friendliness." With Vikram and Amy Jackson in the lead, and Ramkumar Ganesan, Santhanam, Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel and many others to its star cast, 'Ai' is produced by Aascar Ravichandran and canned by PC Sreeram, while music is scored by AR Rahman. 'Ai' team is currently shooting in Kodaikanal and sources close to the team reveals that the project is likely to be wrapped up by December this year, gunning for an April 2014 release.

Just watching them at work, inspires me to work harder!” Upen is all praise for Shankar. “I feel blessed that he spotted me and gave me this break in a new industry. He is so simple and soft-spoken and fun-loving as well. I love our rapport. He’s very patient and gives me time to prepare and perform. He never rushes anything and never compromises in his quest to give the best to the audience. He’s so passionate about cinema, I can see him watching the movie in his head constantly!”

On a strict diet and workout plan for his lean look, Upen is preparing for some special scenes in the movie, which he cannot divulge. “The role will stay in the audience’s memory for a long time,” is all he says. About his co-stars he says, “Vikram is amazingly dedicated and even between shots, he stays in character. Amy Jackson is also from Britain like me, so we bonded well. Vikram Impresses P.C Sriraml

Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Sunday, July 14, 2013 | 12:26 PM

What does PC Sriram think about Vikram ?
It's probably no news that Vikram is one of the hardworking actors in the industry. He rose from humble beginnings to super stardom gradually after dabbling in all sorts of roles and dubbing for movies. Vikram, who is now working for the Shankar directed I, has added another admirer to his growing list of fans. PC Sriram, in a recent interview, was all praises for the actor.

Veteran cinematographer Sriram handles the camera for Shankar's I and what he saw on the sets has surprised him no end. "He is a hardworking actor. He doesn't let the image barriers of a star hinder his personality. He only sees himself as an actor and his stature is nowhere to be seen on the sets,"

Sriram told a tabloid about his experience working with him. "He constantly pushes boundaries to test his skills and I think that quality has taken him places and brought him a lot of success," he further added. I brings PC and Shankar together for the first time.

Shankar's Film is my No.1 Priority - Amy Jackson

As regards Hindi I do have offers, but there are none that I would love to be part of. Shankar’s movie is my number one priority. I couldn’t have asked for any better – he is one of the biggest directors in the country.”

Amy is currently working on ‘I’, directed by Shankar, which also marks her second film with actor Vikram. Working with the talented star seems to have been a wonderful experience for Amy. “Thaandavam was my second film in Tamil and Vikram guided me all the way. He is great fun to be with – a lovely person, alongside being a fantastic actor. You could say he is the whole package. Working with him for I is very special.”

Amy spares no opportunity to gush about being part of Shankar’s film. “When I got the phone call, I was like “Whoa!” I was completely stunned when I learnt that I was to meet Shankar. He is so humble, despite being such a huge name in the Indian film industry. It is an honour to be a part of his film
