Director A.L Vijay talks about Vikram's Thaandavam

The sound and the fury

Subjects focussing on human values and sensitivity trigger director Vijay’s imagination. He talks about his upcoming film Thandavam and working with Vikram and Anushka

At a time when most Tamil filmmakers were busy making films on maternal love, his Deiva Thirumagal focused on the father-daughter relationship. Director A. L. Vijay’s film managed to achieve what few films do — make men emotional about home, values and family ties.

Not just Deiva Thirumagal, all of Vijay’s films have a gripping story to tell. His next, Thandavam, starring Vikram, Anushka Shetty and Amy Jackson, is among the most eagerly awaited releases of the year.

Says Vijay, “I treat every celluloid work of mine as a piece of life. I love subjects that deal with human values. When I am making a film, I live each moment through its varied frames. My aim is to deliver sensible films consistently. I don’t know how many films I will make in my career but I will not compromise on values and emotions. Right now, my upcoming film is playing ‘thandavam’ on my mind,” he smiles.

Vijay and his unit have just returned after a 60-day shoot in London, the longest by any Indian film unit abroad. Ask him about the plot of Thandavam and he replies, “Thandavam is about a man’s rage over being betrayed for selfish gains by many. It has a beautiful love story that runs parallel. The film will be be an unusual saga of revenge with four intertwined plots that will showcase four phases of the protagonist’s life. Vikram plays an intense role. This is one of my most exciting films because the scale is huge. I am thankful to Dhananjayan of UTV for being such a support.”

Though it’s an action-packed film, the director says he enjoyed shooting the romantic scenes as much. “Anushka plays Vikram’s wife in the film. How they meet, fall in love and get married is wonderful.”

One of the factors that play a major role in the success of a film is the trust and bond between the director and his actors.Says Vijay, “I am grateful for working with the talented duo Vikram and Anushka. Vikram is a thorough professional. He is always aware of what is happening on the sets. Once while we were shooting, he stopped in the middle of a shot to alert us about the fading light. During the auditions in London for junior artistes, Vikram shot their pictures and helped me finalise the cast.

“Anushka is a natural before the camera. She is also a good human being. On the last day of shooting in London, we had a scene that involved huge fireworks. After shooting, we had to clean the place. Anushka silently picked a broom and began cleaning the place while Vikram helped with packing. It’s nice to work with stars with no airs.”

Vijay hopes Thandavam which is “expected to hit the screens by September” creates as much buzz at the box-office as his other films have done.
