Written By Chiyaan Vikram on Thursday, August 2, 2012 | 11:42 AM

Actor Vikram opens up about his challenging role in Thaandavam, his inspiration for the character and much more How can I recommend Amy to Shankar?

VIKRAM ACTOR “I can play five more blind characters and still make them all seem different,“ declares Vikram, who plays a visually impaired man in Thaandavam, in a conversation at the film's trailer launch. It was DC that first broke the news about the star's role a few months back. Since Vikram's earlier act as a blind person in Vinayan's Kaasi was much acclaimed, there are bound to be comparisons now.

“Thaandavam belongs to a different genre; it is a highaction entertainer set against a different backdrop. After Kaasi, I waited for a long time for a brilliant subject such as this. Vijay has added an unbelievable distinction to my role, something you will know only when you watch the movie,“ he gushes.

“I have watched Mammootty playing a police officer at least in 35 films. But he is so versatile that each and every character that he's played stands apart,“ adds the star. On the references he used for his role, Vikram shares, “It was Daniel Kish, a blind man and American expert in human echolocation (seeing through sound),who was the main inspiration for my character. We took references and advice from him during our 60-day shoot in London. He uses sound to adapt himself to dailychores and it's difficult to tell that he is blind. He has taught this amazing technique of echolocation to 500 blind children.

We are planning to bring him here during the audio launch and have him con duct a workshop on the revolutionary skill.“ On teaming up with director Vijay for the sec ond time, he says, “I love working with Vijay and look forward to doing more films in the future. As a filmmaker, his strength lies in story writing. He is one of the best directors I have ever worked with. I would say that Thaandavam is Vijay's film.“ The entire cast and crew of Deiva Thirumagal barring Amala Paul has been repeated in Thaandavam as well. Vijay admits that there was no slot for Amala in this film. When journalists asked about Vijay's marriage, Vikram swiftly came to the former's rescue, saying, “I think Vijay is married to cinema as of now.“

Vikram plays a RAW officer and is seen romancing Anushka and Amy Jackson in the movie. Though the actor is evasive about whether or not he plays a dual role in the film, our sources inform us that while his role has dual dimensions, he is not essaying a double role. In the film, Vijay has also touched upon the national issue of terrorism.

While Anushka was conspicuous by her absence, Amy enthralled the crowd with her gorgeous presence. When asked if he was the one who recommended Amy to director Shankar for his upcoming flick I, Vikram smiles and says, “Everyone knows Shankar well. How can I recommend Amy?“ Being his milestone 25th film, music director G.V . Prakash appeared in an elated mood while producer Dhananjeyan engaged the audience with his spirited interaction.
