'Vikram is a director’s dream’ - Director A.L Vijay

He may have started out as an associate to Priyadarshan, but A.L. Vijay has managed to find his niche in the Tamil film industry. With his films Madrasapattinam and the recent Deiva Thirumagal raking in the moolah, Vijay has every reason to smile.

His next project is Thaandavam, starring Vijay, Anushka, Amy Jackson and Lakshmi Rai. It is scheduled to hit the screens in September. “The film is in complete contrast to Deiva Thirugamal,” informs Vijay.

“Thaandavam is an all-out action thriller. I cannot reveal much about the plot, but the film has interesting performances by all the actors. Vikram sir, especially, has delivered a power-packed performance. All I can say is that the audiences are going to love the film,” he adds.

When asked why he repeats the same star cast, he responds, “No, it’s not that I only want to work with the same group of people. It just so happens that they fit perfectly into the characters of the film. ” The film, shot extensively in London, even has a scene on the famous river Thames. “Yes, we have canned some excellent shots all over the UK,” he reveals, adding, “About 60 per cent of the film has been shot abroad and the rest in India.”

The director shares a special bond with Vikram and insists that the actor is every director’s dream. “Every director will surely want to work with him. He’s the kind of actor who submits completely to any role that he’s playing. He can deliver anything that you want and he’s always game for a challenge,” gushes the director. “He’s like an elder brother to me,” he adds affectionately.

Vijay may be busy with mainstream feature films these days but he hasn’t forgotten his first love – making advertising films. “I still continue to shoot ad films whenever I get the opportunity. Ad films always use the latest technology, so it helps me stay up to date with the latest techniques. Also, telling an entire story in 30 seconds is a challenge and that teaches you a lot,” he points out.
